Best Man
Curiously dubbed the "best man", he assumes a place of honor beside the often
nervous groom-to-be, and takes a cue from days of old, when the best man was chosen from
among the strongest warriors in the tribe. It was hoped that he would also defend the
bride from kidnappers who waited to steal her from the groom. Even though there is still
an air of leadership that surrounds this honored attendant, today's best man defends
the groom, and offers his services in a variety of ways.
One of the first official duties of the best man is to assist in selecting appropriate
formalwear for the men of the wedding party, and later to coordinate the group to meet
for measurements at the formalwear specialist (Remember to tell each one to try on their
tux before taking it home to get dressed for the big day). Then when the formal attire is
selected, the best man turns his attention to other important tasks, all geared toward
making the special day a resounding success.
Respectful of the bride's jitters about the notorious "guys night out"; you
might want to schedule a golf trip for the men a few weekends before the wedding. It's
a time of warm comradery and frivolity, and the guys might even put together a video of
their escapades on the course for the bride to watch later! Showing your sentimental side,
the best man may help the other groomsmen select an appropriate gift to present to the
groom - an elegant leather briefcase monogrammed with his initials.
Finally, after months of waiting, the big day/night arrives, and the best man knows it's
up to him to make sure the man-of-the-hour arrives at the ceremony on time, with all the
accessories he needs to look absolutely smashing. Just after you two arrive at the wedding
site, the groom proudly presents the best man with the bride's wedding ring for safekeeping
until the appropriate moment in the service.
During the dazzling celebration that follows, the best man upholds tradition by being
the first guest to honor the newlywed couple with a heartfelt toast, and you may read
several congratulatory telegrams that had arrived from absent friends and family. And
your duties don't end there! After the first dance, with a dashing bow, you invite
the bride's honor attendant to dance, and encourage the other groomsmen to take a
ceremonial twirl around the dance floor with each of the bridesmaids.
Perhaps most importantly, you are the person who sees that the couple's transportation
is ready and waiting for an unforgettable getaway from the reception. Keeping pranksters
at bay, it is your job to ensure that your friend's departure is smooth, carefree and,
most of all, incredibly romantic!
Last of all, you may return to the reception and assist the parents in their departure
and to ensure that all the gifts have been taken to the specified location.
Now your duties are complete. Great Job!
