Winter Wonderland Honeymoons

The winter months are becoming more popular for weddings as couples are finding the rustic formality and cozy romance of the season ideal for their special day. But the trend for honeymoons still seems to be trading in the blustery weather for sunny beaches, sand-covered toes and boat drinks. But snuggling in for a warm escape in a winter wonderland may just be the perfect thing, and there are plenty of options for a snowy honeymoon.

Winter time when I was a little girl was very special. My dad and I would sit at a card table with hot chocolate in hand and put puzzles together. Many of them were of the most beautiful winter scenes; stark red barns with snow covered roofs and huge snow drifts blocking the wooden doors, bright blue skies with wispy clouds, a horse drawn carriage bringing moms, dads, and children to grandma”s farm house for Christmas dinner. I always wanted to go to wherever those pictures were taken, and I imagined them to be in winter”s playground, Vermont. Vermont Vacation describes an ideal honeymoon image of “classic images of festive villages dressed up for seasonal celebrations…deep mountain snow and all the sleigh rides, snowman building, ice pond skating, fireside dining, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, hiking, ice climbing and sledding you can handle in between.”

Aspen is a skiers heaven and has the most diverse terrain in Colorado, as well as hiking, biking, a wide range of restaurants, shopping, lots of film, music, and art festivals, and a fun and fabulous night life. There are many great choices for lodging as well with hotels, B&B”s, condo”s, and home rentals.

If international travel is your idea of a real get-away, Canada boasts amazing skiing, festivals and dog sledding. Montreal”s underground city and Niagra Falls are fun and romantic attractions for newlyweds. Each year, Grindelwald, Switzerland hosts the World Snow Festival. Ice carvers come from all over the world to create beautiful pieces and turn the town center into a land of ice. Switzerland”s snow-capped peaks offer skiing, snowshoeing, and perfect conditions for cuddling in each others arms beside a fire, sipping hot toddy”s and enjoying the out-of-this-world views from you romantic hide-away window.

Whether you rent a cozy log cabin for a week in Colorado, stay in a fabulous bed and breakfast in Vermont, or go the hotel route in Canada or Switzerland, embrace the season and enjoy the having and the holding!
